Elli: Coming of Age in the Holocaust
Livia Bitton-JacksonTo my children for whom I was spared, and who share my pain over the million Jewish children who were not.
Give me the bells that peal in my heart
For the throbbing thunder suddenly stilled
And give me the nectar to touch my lips
To quench my thirst, my pain now fulfilled.
Give me the horror that fills your eyes
That gazes upon my endured plight
And give me the pain that aches in your breast
That grips your guns, that bleaches you white.
Give me a pillow to rest my head
A promise of slumber, dreamless and deep.
And give me a hand to soothe my brow.
Shed the tears I myself cannot weep.
Give me the grief I no longer feel,
Give me the hunger that ceased to gnaw.
Give me the guilt for I have been spared
And give me silence forevermore.
