This beautifully illustrated reference book covers the wide field of ballet and contemporary dance, defined as any form of dance raised to a theatrical level, in over 2,000 entries, alphabetically arranged and fully cross-referenced. There are entries on some 350 ballets and modern dance works, and biographical notes on the people who have created them: choreographers, composers, designers and dancers.
The contributors are all specialists in their subjects and include some of the foremost writers on dance in the United States, Denmark, France, Sweden, Great Britain, and the USSR. The main criterion for selection has been the relevance to today’s productions, not only in the choice of modern works, but also in chartingthe historical perspective of the great companies and the place in dance history of seminal works. Considerable space is given to the remarkable upsurge of creativity in the United States, especially in the field of contemporary and avant-garde dance.
Wherever possible the superb photographs accompanying the text (24 color plates and over 200 black-and-white photographs) have been chosen to show dance in action. A valuable glossary of dance terms is included.
The Encyclopedia of Dance and Ballet is the most complete reference work available on the world of dance, an essential volume for all devotees and students of this captivating and exciting art.
